Boys Town Texas Takes Out the Trash
Boys Town Texas youth and families helped minimize the human footprint on the environment by cleaning up litter Sept. 27 as part of the fifth annual Grafitti Wipeout.
“The commitment from families and youth to becoming more involved in our community was overwhelming,” said Annette Garza, Boys Town Texas Treatment Family Home Director. “They were happy to help in an area that serves those less fortunate.”
The Boys Town Texas crew focused their efforts on Camargo Park, a low-income, high-crime area in San Antonio. The city-wide Grafitti Wipeout aims to decrease vandalism and beautify the area, but the efforts by Boys Town youth and staff did more than just help keep the city clean.
“Service activities have a unique way of developing a youth’s leadership skills, sense of community, self-esteem and other characteristics,” said Garza. “It also provides our youth with the opportunity to explore possible careers, experience the ‘real world’ of their chosen career field and build their educational resume.”
Because of its importance in youths’ character development and education, Boys Town Texas hopes to expand community involvement in future projects working with the elderly, the homeless and other local organizations.
